Fabulous Logo Assignments

I had some fun grading Logo assignments this morning, and I was quite impressed with the creative approach that many students took to this assignment.  Assignments included a replica of a picture in a parent's home, a school model, interesting flowers and even two peas in a pod.
Grading the assignments also made it clear to me that I did not emphasize the idea of super procedure or calling procedure enough in class.  I will explain that idea tonight and allow students to resubmit----using a calling procedure is a trivial process in the programming sequence, but an important and powerful idea.

  1. I would like to think of myself as "not good at creativity;" however, I did find this assignment to be quite fun. I enjoyed the way I was able to use Geometry and creativity in the same project. I look forward to finding ways to use ideas like this in my classroom.

  2. This was definitely a neat way to reconnect with some computer use I experienced as a student with the "lens" of my current pedagogical understanding. It continues to intrigue me how I experienced being in the "driver's seat" when it came to learning and conceptualization in the Logo environment.

The bad news: my 15 day trial just ended on the Microworlds EX demo that I downloaded! I wish their license agreement was about half the cost--if so I would probably get it to continue looking into options to use in my teaching.

Are there any other Mac programs that use Logo, or is Microworlds the only one? I have read a lot of positive review of it online. I also really appreciated the interface, that keeps the old "flipside" right beside the turtle screen.

  3. Indeed, the more I played with Logo, the more I realized that it's a fun piece of software. I really enjoyed creating a sailboat in Logo and learned some tricks, one of which was a calling procedure.
